Spring 2019
Relax Kids is a programme that teaches controlled, relaxing techniques that help children to find a calm headspace to complete work or stressful tasks through fun activities. They learn to control their breathing, steps of meditation and to build confidence. On a weekly basis, children in Year 6 take part in Relax Kids with Miss Barnett in the run up to their SATs tests.
Autumn 2018
We are having a busy first term in Elder Class where we are being introduced to ‘The World of Work’. Our weekly Mecanno workshop has begun and will result in a visit to ‘The Mecanno Challenge’ at Shildon Locomotion Museum. Here we will sample a taster of designing and engineering in the workplace. We also have an educational visit planned to Nissan, Sunderland for their Monozukuri Caravan experience and our Viking Topic will be enriched with a visit to Jorvik Viking Museum in York.
Topic: The Vikings
In topic, we are learning about the Viking struggle for the Kingdom of England. Children will develop their awareness of chronology, conduct historical enquiries and develop and use a wide vocabulary of historical terms so they are able to talk like a historian. We will be learning about the past through a range of sources, including art, and educational visits.
English
In Elder Class, we continue to teach English through a class novel and use aspects of ‘Talk for Writing’ to teach our pupils how to be independent and thoughtful writers. Grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling are incorporated into each lesson. We will be covering a range of genres in writing such as recounts, reports, poetry and narrative throughout the term.
Maths
We will be covering: mental and written methods of arithmetic (including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals), fractions, time, mass, properties of shape – including area and perimeter – and algebra.
