Curriculum – English

Intent

English unlocks access to our rich curriculum, and acquiring the skills of English is a key factor in children’s future success. Therefore, at Sherburn Primary School, we intend to provide every child with a high-quality English education that will enable them to speak, read and write fluently so they can express their ideas and emotions confidently and effectively. We want all of our pupils to be capable readers, writers, spellers and speakers, who can transfer these skills to other curriculum areas, and who are prepared for the next steps in their education.  It is our vision that creativity is at the helm of our English curriculum and for children to learn new skills in a fun and engaging way.

At Sherburn Primary, it is our intention to instil a passion for books and a love of reading by introducing children to high-quality texts and immersing them into vocabulary-rich learning environments. Children will be exposed to a language-heavy, creative English curriculum that will not only enable them to become primary literate but will also develop a love of reading, creative writing and purposeful speaking and listening. Ultimately, our aim is to equip pupils with the skills and desire to become lifelong learners.
